A fuel pump failing can certainly leave you high and dry, and it can happen with no prior warning. It is great at this point to know that you have a mechanic in the family who can, not only diagnose the problem, but also fix it. A lot of weekend mechanics have no problem installing a new fuel pump, but they need the right tools, and a replacement part. The car does really need to be propped up so that the gasoline tank can be dropped down. In case you just didn’t know it, the fuel pump is located in the gas tank. Your neighborhood parts shop will be able to supply you with a replacement pump.
You do not want to put in a generic model just to save money, because you want one that will last, and work the best it can. Putting in a generic to save money may make you regret it later. Being economical by ordering online is good and well, but it does come with a delay for shipping of the part. Should you have a second automobile, that’s fine. For those who don’t have the luxury of having the ability to wait, the local mechanic’s shop is often the quickest solution, but it will cost you. And, of course, people never save money in fear of repairs when they buy a vehicle.
You’ll find quite a few parts on a car that will fail without notice, and a fuel pump is but one of them. To save yourself on the cost, it would be a smart idea to figure out how to do the repairs yourself, or at least find yourself a mechanic you can trust.
